With the recent changes to the cost of monsters in the war shop there really isn't a whole lot of point for players to spend any resources on wars. For elite guilds where you are fighting for pride and 400+ coins every 2 days, maybe. For the average player in a guild that wins 50-55% of the time and averages maybe 100-125 coins every 2 days its far better to save up gems to buy monsters that way. Spending 20 gems for maybe 1-2 war coins is a terrible proposition.
I understand that. But some elite wars are decided by 1-2 war coins, so you want to get any possible tactical advantage you can get.
I know you know, but for people who have not experienced this first hand: many players spend hundreds of gems (note that I usually don't go THAT far) on devising a strong defence (changing runes, changing skills, speed ranking monsters), in the knowledge that chances are very present they will still get 0/5 on defence.
The sense of fulfilment when it works out however, makes it worth all the trouble ....
So I guess the answer to the original question depends on the kind of wars you are playing.
