There has certainly been some outrage regarding SP's latest released monsters - in particular, Lord Pumpseed and The Forsaken monsters. For those who don't know, both of these cannot be ranked up with Elemental Cells or Elementium, and are implied to have heavily limited ways of obtaining. This caused people to call them P2W options because the only way to get them strong is through paying money (or have an absurd amount of gems as a team, in Pumpseed's case) and obviously made them upset about it. However, people are glossing over many important things SP has improved over the years. As a person who experienced different eras of this game, I feel like I can shed some light on things. Let's go back about 2 years ago, to the middle of 2017.
It's an era where the baseline denier Speed is 3465, 3476 is considered good and anything above is amazing, with 3498 being a common Speed for those amazing deniers to have. Recently Denied isn't a thing except with Stun, Mega deny effects bypass immunities, and there is no Taunt trait, SCs, Dodge Area, Anticipation or Relics - there's nothing a monster can do without actually moving. In a time like this, both Llum and Samael struck fear into the hearts of the people, with their extremely high Speed stats - Samael in particular was on a whole new level, unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. Nemeses and VIPs were available only for money, and they were offered regularly with 3 different rank choices; 0, 1 or 3, and you can guess the price tags on them. Xiron was just announced, and people were going crazy about it because it was in the same ballpark as Samael - from Live Duels you know how often Mega deny effects land with Xiron, and back in the day, as I said before, they bypassed their respective immunities and most deny effects didn't have a Recently Denied variant, so you are looking at a beast of a monster that can wipe teams with great ease and lock down many monsters. Put Zyla or VoltaiK besides him with nothing to stop them, and that's an easy game. If you noticed, almost all monsters I mentioned thus far were obtainable only by paying money. But maybe it's fine. You can get them at Rank 0 for a acceptable price, then rank them up with Elemental Cells, right? No. They didn't exist back then, so you had to grind Elementium with no Elementium Dungeons available if you wanted to rank up these premium monsters - or just buy more, which added up really high really quickly. At least the Group 4 move glitch existed so people could count on that to get somewhat full movesets: if i the system worked as intended, you would have to actually rank up the monster to get its moves, and Rank 3 Nemeses cost A LOT. In these conditions, it's not hard to see how poor F2P players get squashed against broken ranked up Nemesis monsters, since it was hard to rank up any non-breedable monster save for Team Shop monsters (by the way, the Team Shop didn't include the 7 to 10 Rune Chests, so getting Runes was a bit harder too). Here are some other things I can think of of this era:
-Events offered just Rank 0 versions of monsters. To reset the event and get the desired reward again, you would have to complete THE WHOLE THING.
-Lots of game breaking bugs (like the Group 4 glitch, Torture turn skip, etc).
-Mazes were, on top of providing just a Rank 0 monster, almost impossible to complete without sacrificing some sleep.
Now skip ahead 2 years to our current day. Gems are much easier to get (50+ per week), good Runes aren't a dream, Mazes are easily completed with 20 and 30% discounts offering you cells on top of the monster itself if you time yourself right (I didn't sacrifice any amount of sleep), some progressive events like Wyrmlad's Tale are completeable with around 150 Gems, and most importantly, Elemental Cells exist and can be obtained from Epic monsters. The metagame was also balanced a lot with Relics, SCs, Anticipation and other things that allow monsters to act without moving (it does have its problems, but it's much better now than then). Warmasters are the most powerful monster type and they can be obtained technically for free. I quit the game when they released Xiron and came back when they released Hookuai and Volthar, and as someone who experienced how harshly F2P was treated, I was shocked at how many awesome things one could get for free now. For example, I have been playing actively since Hookuai's release, and without nothing beforehand, I got (for absolutely free) a Rank 3 Ugluk, a Rank 3 Wyrmlad, a Rank 3 Hookuai, a Rank 3 Zizania and too many Rank 2 meta monsters to count, all armed with mostly Level 8+ Runes - that's greater progress than I have ever made before.
So where am I trying to go with this? It's true that The Forsaken and Lord Pumpseed are alarming players, and I cannot say that they don't remind me of the bad old days. To me, it's a wrong choice to design monsters this way because you don't feel like your hard work pays off, since you just pay money to get something strong. However, I also don't think that calling SP greedy and favoring only P2W is correct because they have improved A LOT over the years. Just observe your growth over some period of time, and if you're an active player, you are bound to see how massive it is.
