What are TOKENS**? (ETA)
Post count: 397Reputation: 11Joined:@kalie-s Gems are what makes the game go round! They are usually used to speed up things and buy gold and food. But you have to buy gems with real money. There are lots of ways to get gems besides money! You'll see.

Post count: 849Reputation: 862Joined:Location: IrelandYou do not need to buy gems with money, you can get some in as rewards in chests for events in the game.
Edit: You can also get 1 gem each day with Jewelem's tower.
Your tally for gems is at the top of your game screen along with gold and food, it's the pink gemstone.
You must use gems to unlock new islands, and upgrade hatchery etc. Advice: save gems for these until you have them done. You can use gems also for speeding up wait times on almost anything in the game. And skipping tasks in some events.
Buying gold and food and dragons from the shop with gems is a poor investment.Cici Dragons Leader

Because it is much harder to get gems than it is to get other resources. Buying food with gems is like paying the pizza delivery guy for a couple of pizzas with an iPhone instead of 40 bucks.
Newbies should save and use their gems on things that require them, expansions, hatchery and breedery upgrades, kindergartens, etc. I don't remember what else needed them, it was too long ago for me.
If you need food then produce more gold.
If you need gold then hatch and grow your dragons, and place those element crystals for a boost, and use Midarian's tower daily also.
If you need dragons then be patient, you will get nearly every single one in events over time, or by trading orbs with your alliance. I am free to play, since 3.5 years, and this is how I got where I am today, with around 1035 dragons.Cici Dragons Leader

Personally I am of the believe that no dragons should be purchased from the shop except those during sale promotions and only after you have used your gems to buy the important things, like island and building expansions. You most certainly should NEVER buy breedable dragons for gems or those that are permanently in the shop. They are a waste of resources as well as overpriced. Buying food for gems during a critical point is acceptable but then again I would only do that when I do not have any other expansions to buy.
As Susan stated you need to work to improve your islands and not rush to buy unnecessary things. Island expansions are expensive even with buying them on sale and soon you will need them for Dragonarium slots, save them and use them wisely.
I am a collector not a fighter, need I say more? Oh yeah....and female. ;)

Tokens are used to upgrade your habitats. When you buy a habitat it is level 1 and can hold 2 dragons. You can upgrade it to level 2 with gold and it will hold 4 dragons. You can further upgrade it up to level 7 with the tokens and it can hold up to 9 dragons. Rainbow habitat is a special exception that can hold 25 dragons at level 7.Cici Dragons Leader
