It struck me recently how many of the monsters have personal weapons of choice. Would it not be a good idea to scrap what we currently know as "Items" and instead base a new metagame around the personal items of each monster - such as Thyra's electrical baton, Lumoona's staff, Gregorz' blade, Warrior's axe etc.
In battle, instead of activating cooldowns or breaking shields (which already exist), we could also have an option of disabling weapons.
Imagine if some of the monsters' moves were only available through said weapons, and if it has been disabled in battle, then those moves are no longer available to use.
For example Thyra generates electricity through her baton. If I had a monster to disable it, then she cannot use her thunder attacks, as she has no baton. Thus some players would not run her with her baton, and instead we would see variation in the appearances of the monsters in battle.
