Anyone knows how to upgrade the metal/war/... habitats now? They now require element-specific tokens, but there are no arenas past the electric, so no way to earn those tokens.

I have a nagging feeling that SP wants all the dragoncity players to just go away, they're just too shy to say so openly.

You misunderstood, only to upgrade from big to large will cost tokens. The regular upgrades are the same. This is an extra bonus, something we were not expecting, so i think it is a good thing.
