Alot of battles seem to come down to who is faster, the team with the fastest runes wins. and great defensive strategies can never get off the ground. what good are shields and regen when you don't get a chance to use them. I suggest a prefight phase where you can only use skills aimed at allies. this will open up some new team strategies apart from getting 3 level ten speed runes.

I agree that speed is a too important stat. I like your idea for remodeling it too. However, just as a suggestion, I would do it so monsters taking their first turn can use a defensive ability but no hurting over low damage or stunning/blinding. Dazing and other debuffing still allowed. This would encourage more defensive strats, but will keep speed an important factor, but not the most.
Just a suggestion. Monster Legends should listen to this.
