You have to purchase each island AND each island has 9 expansions that must be purchased separately. It has been a very long time and prices have changed. Generally you have to spend gems to purchase the islands and then gold for each of the 9 expansions.
I believe I believe that all expansions have to be purchased before you can move to the next island as well.
If you can’t take the heat, don’t tickle the dragon!
