The biggest frustration for me was that I got to the end of the Hard path, had my top 6 dragons lined up to fight (only ones still up), hit Go... and the game crashes. Then when I come back, they've been put on cooldown. So I never had a chance to try the fight at all. Especially with the cooldowns so punishing, and the game so unstable, that should NOT be the result.

@nynaevelan I fully agree with your comments, and will add that having to auto select so many teams for a single node isn’t challenging, strategic, or fun. It’s just plain tedious. Like the very worst aspects of some MMOs, it’s simply pure mindless grinding. Which is really bad gameplay design.

Also the randomization of key colors is just plain silly. Like I said last time, its only purpose is to try and inhibit community discussion and collaboration. Again, that’s bad gameplay design.

That means the dragon has gotten enough kills to have the rank C-. As they get more, they can rank all the way up to A+. This improves their combat stats, and makes a HUGE difference to their combat capability. Try to feed kills to your main fighters to get them to A+ ASAP for better results.

You can see more details (like the number of kills to reach each rank) on the stats screen for each dragon, just tap on the corresponding octagon.

The requirements for each node scale up FAR too much as you progress. When a single node later in the event needs 400-500 tokens collected (they probably actually go up higher than that), and on a REALLY good day you might be able to make 100 moves without spending money, the mismatch is obvious. Just getting through all the nodes for Far West would be challenging if they were all a similar cost to the first, with the scaleup it looks like you'd need more than 10x what can actually be reasonably accomplished.

Similarly the mission requirements scale up much too fast and far.

The three lines need to be move at more similar speeds. Somebody who actually gets to Far West would probably have gone through the bottom line 2-3 times at least.

You shouldn't lose out completely either on tokens you collect when there isn't an active node for them, or when you collect more in a single move than are needed for the current node.

Powerups hit by other powerups should go off themselves, not simply vanish.

Powerups should not go away when the puzzle level advances.

Having a quest requiring the ultimate prize dragon show up with a third of the event left to run, instead of after the event, is ridiculous.

Yeah, it's cosmetic, but I believe the main thing is that it's supposed to tell the story of the Heroes of Winter.
Should they have done that with every Island? Maybe so. But we'll have to wait and see to get the bigger picture.

They ARE Christmas-themed - just look at the ToL, it's lit up like a Christmas tree. And the idea of it being snowy now, but getting warmer over the month, is directly contradictory to the story - which states that all of Dragon City is exceedingly hot already. Not just not-winter, but hotter than summer.

To conform to the story, we ought to see things like water features drying up, no snow at all, and then once the machine is destroyed it gets snowy.

This is just a preliminary impression, but it looks to me like keys are likely to be the limiting factor rather than the battles. People will probably be well served to calculate how many coins they can sink into Graffiti Artist without sacrificing their Color Splash goals, since for the next two days that's the only source of keys beyond the starting 3 and what you can pick up on the Rescue paths themselves, aka the only option to proceed if you find yourself blocked behind doors on all three paths. (Tap on the keys icons and you get a popup saying that they'll be available in videos and a quest from the 19th through the 22nd.)

Personally it looks like I can get 3 of his chests, plus another 3 for $2 if that seems worthwhile. I'd be giving up Chinese, but that's a dupe for me anyway.

Haven't yet had a chance to find out if you can substitute gems for keys, but whether or not you can may make a big difference.

Update: No, you can't buy keys with gems. And the second Easy door costs 5 green, while the first Medium door costs 8 green, 2 red, and the first Hard is 1 blue. Those chests better contain a LOT of keys each.

Thanks! Comparing against my current state, I can confirm that the 5 green is indeed door #2. Door #1 was 1 green from the starting 2g1r.

Combining with your previous information, we can conclude that the first 7 Graffiti chests would get one to the 3y door, with 5g2r left over. Then there's one more door behind that with a currently-unknown cost.

Which for me personally means that I have to write off Tempera in order to have a shot at Bookaday without spending more than I'm prepared to. A VR for a VR plus more experience with this new event type... I might do that.

Also, take a look at the Orbs Shop - Equinox, Dolphin, Chainmail, and Deep Sea are specials for the next two days. Could this perhaps mean that they'll be required for the yellow key quest? Seems awfully random otherwise.

There's one of each key type available in the Triple Offer, though you can't actually triple up on them. Cost in gems isn't as high as I was afraid of, but it's only one of each so of dubious value.

Also, let's check whether SP scrambled the key colors again. In the top row, I have Green and Red. The former coming from Abyssal, the latter from the quest. In the second row, I have Yellow and Big (spiky?) Blue, coming from quest/ads and Abyssal, respectively. In the third row I have Big Red, coming from the Easy/Medium paths.

That doesn't match up with the colors @Nynaevelan sees, so it looks like information sharing will have to happen in the form of keys #1-5 again, rather than colors. @Nynaevelan, would you mind recasting the excellent information you just shared in those terms?

Also, I've already opened at least one door but didn't think to write down the cost. But where I'm at - Easy node 7 requires 3 #1 and 4 #3, Medium node 2 requires 2 #4 and 1 #2, Hard node 1 requires 2 #1 and 1 #5.

All the folks saying "you should have just found a better alliance" are ignoring the fact that it has only been a VERY short time since it became possible to even attempt that in a meaningful way. For the great majority of the time alliances have existed, the search results would always be full of 20/20 alliances and maybe a couple with space, which were almost certainly inactive. And then you had to wait through at least one chest to find out what you got. Only recently have full alliances gotten filtered out so that you can actually see some options, and even then the ability to hop around is very slow.

The overwhelming majority of alliances are full of inactive players, and there is not one single solitary thing the game does to help you find one that isn't. Unless you've got a bunch of people who were already friends playing the game, then getting a decent alliance is pure luck at extraordinarily low odds. The sheer volume of inactivity just swamps everything, and makes the overall alliance function completely unworkable (again, except for people with pre-existing networks or get really really lucky).

We need a way to find active alliances to join in order for the system to work.

And given just how many people in the arenas right now are using Yggdrasil, you kind of have to expect an awful lot of the OTHER Heroics people use are hacked too.

If there are that many hackers stupid enough to reveal themselves by using an unreleased dragon, how many MORE are there who just give themselves L40s of all the ones which have actually come out, so won't get noticed?

SP has to come up with a better way of handling this than player reports. At this point I am forced to assume that the majority of arena competitors are cheaters.

Makes it easier than when people had to keep walking back and forth past Skeleton King because they didn't get the right number.

In my mind, it was pretty clear why we had that advantage. It was meant to be easy, to provide a minor stream of food/gem income while ranking up dragons. The mechanics otherwise (invisible opposition, no option to skip) were only surmountable because we had that advantage.

The benefits aren’t even vaguely worthwhile unless the fights are easy.

Plus no fights have ever been truly equal, even in the Arena we get to use trained attacks while the oppponent doesn’t. Not to mention strategic swapping. The active player has always had an advantage, which makes sense because they have far more to gain and lose.

In the case of the Leagues, the defender has absolutely nothing at stake - they aren’t even aware of the matchup - so the attacker should have a big edge.

I could support the recent-ish AI change to make the enemies smarter in their choice of attacks, that made fights more strategic. Once you’re up against 3 L40 A+ heroics now though, what are you supposed to do about it? Reset to L1 a couple times a day?

@Nynaevelan said in Thoughts on the League changes?:

If you want to get right down to it all three fighting areas can be used for that purpose, you just get different rewards for them.

While this sounds good on paper, in-game it is entirely false. When ranking up new dragons, you are by definition using a weaker team. So you need an advantage of some sort to make up for that. You don’t have one in the Arena. You now don’t have one in the Leagues. There are too few battles in the Quests to be meaningful relative to the kill counts needed to rank up.

There simply isn’t a practical place to do it now, and that’s a fact.

You can watch the ads repeatedly and stack the duration (up to 12h, apparently). 8 ads a day isn't a great burden, so keeping it at full production continuously for free does seem viable.

Which makes the greenhouse the equivalent of about 2.7 farms running Producer (about 20% more food production), or 0.45 of a farm running Super Producer. That's definitely something, especially for those of us without the gold to run Super Producer nonstop. The less gold production you have, the better it gets - if all you can do is Harvester, it's the equivalent of almost 4 farms (more really, since a 3-hour production time you can't really keep going all night).

So it's something that helps newer players most, reasonably developed players appreciably, and long-term vets not much. That seems pretty good to me actually.

But yeah, going for full production off of anything other than ads is only for the innumerate.

posted in General Discussion read more
  • Scott Clark

I'd recommend level 10 at least for all dragons - that's where their rate of gold production growth drops off. Takes very little food to go from 7-10, and you get interestingly more gold out of it. Which will more than pay for additional food production.

Just FYI, for those few who are gullible enough (yes, I mean to apply that description to myself) to actually spend enough $$$ to pick up Durian within the ludicrous time limit.

Also, while I did get enough orbs to start summoning a Frankie despite the bug (and started doing so just to be on the safe side), that's still in progress. So it does seem that one hatched from an egg counts. Judging from Goblin, I'll guess that a pre-existing one would count too.
