Well I think I am going to be satisfied with my results from this maze. I already have a few like Cheshire, toad, sheep and black swan, so I'm not finishing those paths. I think pig is incredibly ugly so didnt bother about it.
I think if my calculations are correct, and we keep getting a few extra coins in quests and videos (1500 should be enough) I will gain
Shelly, Bucky, The Good, Kitty, Nice and Doggy. Great haul for me from a single, non-intensive event. ๐Ÿ™‚

My best ones are level 40 heroics. I'm only just starting work on empowering and levelling up some others 0_1560549617488_Screenshot_20190613-141853_DragonCity.jpg

I think this was one of the best races ever. I only spent about 20 gems, I reached my ultimate goal of lap 17, so got the heroic, the 200x every tokens, and the 15x heroic essences. And all 3 minor dragons were new for me too.
I can't understand all the moaning and calling it the worst race ever. Aside from the fact that the quest battles were lacking, which was a low blow from SP I agree, it has to be the easiest race of the 21 I have done. Does nobody who is complaining remember races like high celestial? I spent about 150 gems for that one. Since they made the race 50 laps, the early laps are lovely and the race is so relaxing! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I kept checking in airplane mode and didn't find the gems until this last collection, as my device kept closing the game. It took 30 purple chests to find the gems, but I turned wifi back on and they're saved now. Happy!

Only buy expansions with gold, save gems for islands. Get friends through Facebook, your alliance, or check for a topic on this forum. Collect regularly and use your meridian tower daily for extra gold.
Earn gems in league battles, videos and events. Use the jewelem tower daily. Save the gems for buying the islands. Don't waste gems on getting breedable dragons.
Earn tokens where you can and use them to upgrade your existing habitats so you can fit more dragons on them.

If you know you will never purchase them, then remove them. You do this just like you remove any other obstacle on the islands, bushes rocks etc. Bottom right of the screen when you click the cage.

I know I won't get the top prize in most events, except races where I usually win.
I just settle for the lesser prizes in other events. I finished the medium path this time, happy with one new dragon there, I already had the easy path dragon.

Do other games have a feature like this to build experience? Honest question, I have no idea.
But this idea isn't very challenging. Where is the advantage to veteran players if any newbie can rank up dragons this way.
We used to be able to use leagues to get experience for dragons, but those days are gone. My main source of experience is now the quest battles, or challenges with friends (I have only 17).

Well we do also get food from quests, freebie videos, and events. Sometimes quite generous amounts of it.
I've been playing for 2 years now and have 8 of my heroics at level 40. They are the core of my league battle team.
But arena battles have been all legendaries lately and none of mine are past level 33. Yet I can fight effectively there as well.
As I said, all players have this limitation, but you can also purchase food if you want (I don't).
And personally I would find a game where everything is given away or easily earned to be quite boring. At least with this limitation, there is a bit of a challenge involved, and your level 40 dragons are well earned.

Well then I think the answer to your question is simply patience. We're all in the same boat, we all have the same costs, we all struggle to feed our dragons. Just grow what food you can afford.
